Fires are serious but learning how to protect yourself and your family can be lots of Fun...

• Never play with matches or lighters! You could start a fire and burn yourself. If you find matches or a lighter make sure to take them right away to your mom and dad.

• Remind mom and dad to check the smoke detectors in your home once a month and to change the batteries at least once a year. If your home does not have a smoke detector remind mom and dad how important it is to have a smoke detector in your home, it can save a life.

• Fire extinguishers are very important to have, you can put out a small fire before the fire gets to big for you to control. Every home needs a fire extinguisher, make sure you have one in your home and you can help mom and dad teach everyone in your family how to use it. If you have a sitter, mom and dad need to make sure the sitter knows how to use the fire extinguisher also.

• Make sure that mom and dad keep a list of emergency phone numbers next to the phone in case of an emergency. If your home is on fire and you can not put it out, do not call for help from your home, go to a neighbors home and call for help.

• Help mom and dad make an escape plan and a place where everyone is to meet, practicing your escape plan is fun for the whole family and it also lets everyone in your home know how to get out incase of a fire. Always make sure you have at least two ways out of your home just so that you can make sure that everyone gets out safely. If you have a sitter, make sure that mom and dad tell the sitter about the escape plan and how to get out also.

• Make sure that your home has a house number on it so that it is easy for the emergency vehicles to find you in case of an emergency.

• If your clothes are on fire, you should never run. Make sure that you know how to stop - drop - and roll to put out the fire. If you do not know about stop - drop - and roll, make sure to ask your mom and dad about it and ask them to teach it to you. Stop - drop - and roll can safe a life.
